Bastille causing admin binary file permissions to be set to 000

It turns out that Bastille on Ubuntu 10.04 has a nasty side-effect of recording invalid permissions in the /var/lib/dpkg/statoverride for the various system binaries that it wants to set more restrictive permissions on. This means that when dpkg updates those binaries it resets their permissions to 000. Which causes trouble.

If you suffer from this problem, edit the above file and remove all of the lines that set permissions to 0.
